PR Card Renewal
PR Card Renewal
A Permanent Resident (PR) Card is an essential document for permanent residents of Canada. It proves your status as a permanent resident and is required for re-entry into Canada when traveling abroad.
If your PR card is about to expire or has already expired, you need to renew it to continue enjoying the rights of a permanent resident. The PR card renewal process is managed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Eligibility Criteria for PR Card Renewal
To be eligible for PR card renewal, you must meet certain requirements:
1. Permanent Resident Status
- o You must still be a permanent resident of Canada.
- o If you have lost your PR status (e.g., through a decision of inadmissibility or abandonment), you cannot renew your PR card. In such cases, you may need to apply for reinstatement of your permanent resident status.
2. Residency Obligation
-
- o You must have met the residency obligation to remain a permanent resident. Specifically, you must have lived in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) out of the last 5 years before applying for renewal.
- o If you were outside Canada for any reason, those days might still count towards your residency obligation if you were:
- o Employed full-time by a Canadian company or the Canadian government.
- o Accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse or parent.
If you haven’t met the residency requirement, you may not be eligible to renew your PR card. In such cases, you may need to apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD) if you are outside Canada and cannot return without one.
Documents Required for PR Card Renewal
When renewing your PR card, you’ll need to submit the following documents:
1. PR Card Renewal Application Form
- o You must complete and submit IMM 5444 (Application for a Permanent Resident Card). This form is available on the IRCC website.
2. Proof of Permanent Resident Status
-
- o You need to provide a copy of your PR card or other documents proving your permanent resident status (e.g., Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)).
3. Proof of Residency
- o You need to provide evidence showing that you meet the residency obligation (730 days in Canada within the last 5 years). This can include documents such as:
- • Tax records (e.g., Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency).
- • Employment records.
- • Rental agreements.
- • Travel records.
- • School records.
- • Health care coverage in Canada.
4. Photos
- o Two passport-sized photos that meet the photo requirements specified by IRCC.
5. Application Fee
- o $50 CAD for the PR card renewal application. Payment can be made through the IRCC website (if applying online) or by bank draft or money order (if applying by mail).
How to Apply for PR Card Renewal
Step 1: Check Eligibility
Ensure you meet all eligibility requirements, including the residency obligation. You can find a residency calculator on the IRCC website to help you determine if you qualify.
Step 2: Complete the Application Form
Fill out the IMM 5444 form carefully. Make sure to include all necessary information and documents. If you’re applying online, you’ll create an account on the IRCC website and upload your completed forms and supporting documents.
Step 3: Gather Supporting Documents
Collect all required documents, including proof of residency, photos, and payment confirmation. If you are applying by mail, make sure you send original or certified copies of the required documents.
Step 4: Pay the Fees
Pay the $50 CAD application fee. You can pay this fee online if applying through the IRCC website, or through other payment methods for paper applications.
Step 5: Submit the Application
- • Online: If you are applying online, create an account on the IRCC website, fill out the forms, upload documents, and submit your payment.
- • By Mail: If applying by mail, send the completed form, supporting documents, photos, and payment receipt to the IRCC address specified on the form.
Step 6: Wait for Processing
After you submit your application, it may take several weeks or months to process, depending on the volume of applications and other factors. The typical processing time for PR card renewal is around 104 days or more. You can check the status of your application online through your IRCC account.
Step 7: PR Card Issuance
If your application is approved and you meet all the eligibility requirements, your new PR card will be mailed to your address in Canada. The card is typically valid for 5 years, and you can use it for travel and proof of permanent resident status.
Important Considerations
- • Residency Obligation: If you have not met the residency requirement (730 days within the last 5 years), you might not be able to renew your PR card. In this case, you may be eligible to apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) if you are outside Canada, or you can try to re-enter Canada and meet the residency requirement to renew your PR card later.
- • Travel Outside Canada: If you need to travel outside Canada while your PR card is being processed or if you do not meet the residency requirement, you may apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to return to Canada.
- • Lost PR Card: If your PR card is lost, stolen, or damaged, you should apply for a replacement card rather than a renewal. You will need to complete the same application form and submit a police report if it was stolen.
- • Processing Times: The processing time for PR card renewal can vary, but you can check the current processing times on the IRCC website.
