ETA – Electronics Travel Authorization

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a travel authorization required for visa-exempt foreign nationals who are flying to Canada. It is an entry requirement for visa-exempt travelers, meaning you don’t need a visa to visit Canada but must have an eTA before boarding your flight. The eTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for up to 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

QUICK ENQUIRY

Greetings! Kindly provide your requirements below, and we’ll get back to you shortly.

    Who Needs an eTA?

An eTA is required for most visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to Canada by air. This includes:

    1. Citizens of Visa-Exempt Countries

      1. o Travelers from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, and many others do not need a visa but must obtain an eTA.
      2. o For a full list of visa-exempt countries, you can visit the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

    2. Permanent Residents of the United States

      1. o U.S. green card holders and permanent residents who are traveling to Canada by air must have an eTA (even if they do not need a visa).

    3. Traveling by Air

      1. o The eTA is only required for air travel. If you are traveling to Canada by land or sea (e.g., by car or cruise), you do not need an eTA.

Who Does Not Need an eTA?

You do not need an eTA if:

      1. 1. You are from a country that requires a visa to enter Canada (e.g., India, China, Nigeria).
      2. 2. You are a U.S. citizen (U.S. citizens do not need an eTA or a visa for short visits to Canada).
      3. 3. You are traveling by land or sea (such as by car, bus, or cruise).
      4. 4. You are a Canadian citizen (Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, do not need an eTA).
      5. 5. You are a permanent resident of Canada (PR card holders do not need an eTA).

How to Apply for an eTA

The application process for an eTA is simple and can be done online. Here’s how you can apply for an eTA:

    Step 1: Check Eligibility

Ensure that you are from a visa-exempt country and are traveling to Canada by air.

    Step 2: Gather Required Information

When applying for an eTA, you will need:

      1. • A valid passport (from a visa-exempt country).
      2. • A credit card or debit card to pay the eTA fee.
      3. Email address where you will receive your eTA approval.

    Step 3: Apply Online

You can apply for your eTA through the official IRCC website. The application form is straightforward and requires personal information such as:

      1. • Name, date of birth, and passport details.
      2. • Your contact information (email and phone number).
      3. • Travel details (purpose of visit, dates, etc.).

Most applicants get their eTA approval within minutes, but you should apply at least 72 hours before your flight to allow enough processing time in case of issues.

    Step 4: Pay the Fee

The eTA fee is 7 CAD and can be paid using a credit card or debit card online.

    Step 5: Wait for Approval

Once your eTA is approved, you will receive confirmation by email. The approval is linked electronically to your passport, so there’s no need to print or carry it with you, but it’s advisable to keep a copy of the email for reference.

In some cases, you may be asked to provide additional information or documents, and your application may take longer to process.

    eTA Validity and Use

      1. Validity Period: Your eTA is valid for 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
      2. Multiple Entries: Once approved, the eTA allows for multiple entries into Canada for stays of up to 6 months at a time.
      3. Traveling to Canada: You will need to show your valid passport to Canadian border officials upon arrival, along with the eTA link to your passport (the border agent will have access to it electronically).

    Important Considerations

      1. 1. Linking to Passport: The eTA is electronically linked to your passport. If you get a new passport, you will need to apply for a new eTA.
      2. 2. Change of Travel Plans: If your travel plans change (e.g., you need to change your flight details or travel to another part of Canada), you do not need a new eTA unless your passport changes.
      3. 3. Airlines Check: Airlines are required to check that passengers have a valid eTA before boarding a flight to Canada. If you don’t have one, you may be denied boarding.
      4. 4. Eligibility Issues: If you are denied an eTA, you may need to apply for a visitor visa to enter Canada.

    eTA Processing Time

      1. Most applications are processed within minutes.
      2. In some cases, additional documents or information may be required, which can delay processing. You should apply at least 3 days before your flight to allow time for any delays or requests for additional information.

How to Check Your eTA Status

If you want to check the status of your eTA application or make updates (such as correcting personal information), you can do so online through the IRCC website. You’ll need your application number or passport details to check the status.

    Renewing an eTA

If your passport expires and you get a new one, you will need to apply for a new eTA, as it is linked to your passport.
