Parents, Grandparents Sponsorship

Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program (PGP)

The Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program (PGP) allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and/or grandparents to come to Canada as permanent residents. This program is highly sought after and provides a pathway for families to reunite in Canada.

QUICK ENQUIRY

Greetings! Kindly provide your requirements below, and we’ll get back to you shortly.

    Eligibility to Sponsor

To sponsor your parents or grandparents, you must meet certain eligibility criteria. As a sponsor, you need to prove that you can financially support your relatives once they arrive in Canada.

    1. Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident

    1. o You must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.
    2. o Canadian citizens can sponsor from outside of Canada, but permanent residents must be residing in Canada to sponsor.

    2. Be at Least 18 Years Old

    1. o You must be at least 18 years of age when applying.

    3. Meet Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) Requirement

    1. o You need to prove that you have a certain income level to support your parents or grandparents once they come to Canada.
    2. o The income requirement depends on your family size (the number of people in your household, including the persons you are sponsoring).
    3. o The minimum income is determined based on the Low Income Measure (LIM), which varies by province and family size.

    4. Sign an Undertaking to Support Your Parents/Grandparents

    1. o You must agree to financially support your parents or grandparents for 20 years once they become permanent residents in Canada.
    2. o This is a legal commitment, and you must ensure they do not need to rely on government assistance during this period.

    5. Not in Default of Previous Sponsorships

    1. o You must not have any unpaid debts or be in default of a previous sponsorship agreement. If you have previously sponsored other family members and they failed to meet their requirements, you may not be eligible.

    6. Financial Documents

    1. o You must provide documents such as tax returns, Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), and proof of income (like employment letters or pay stubs) to show that you meet the minimum necessary income.

    Eligibility for the Sponsored Parent/Grandparent

The person being sponsored (your parent or grandparent) must meet the following conditions:

    1. Relationship Verification

    1. o You must prove that the person you are sponsoring is your parent or grandparent. This can be done with official documents, such as birth certificates or family records.

    2. Medical and Criminal Checks

    1. o The sponsored person must undergo medical and criminal background checks as part of the process.
    2. o Criminal inadmissibility or health-related inadmissibility may prevent the sponsored parent or grandparent from being approved for permanent residency.

    3. Admissibility

    1. o The sponsored person must meet all the requirements for being admissible to Canada. This includes passing security, criminal, and medical checks.

How to Apply for Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship

The application process for sponsoring parents or grandparents consists of several steps:

    1. Check the Sponsorship Application Period

    1. o The PGP program is not always open. It typically opens for a short period each year, and there are limited spaces available for applications.
    2. o IRCC usually announces when the program is open for new applications. The process is competitive, so it’s important to act quickly when the program opens.

    2. Complete the Interest to Sponsor Form

    1. o IRCC uses a random selection process to choose applicants who will be allowed to submit a full application.
    2. o If the program is open, you must first submit an Interest to Sponsor form (also called the “Expression of Interest” form).
    3. o You cannot submit a full application without receiving an invitation to apply through this process.

    3. Receive Invitation to Apply

    1. o If your name is randomly selected, you will receive an invitation to apply (ITA). You will then be asked to submit a full application package, including all required documents.

    4. Prepare and Submit the Full Application

    1. o Once invited, you will need to complete and submit a full application for parent and grandparent sponsorship. This includes the following:
      1. o Proof of your relationship to the sponsored individuals.
      2. o Financial documents (e.g., Notice of Assessment, T4s, pay stubs, employment letters) to demonstrate that you meet the minimum necessary income.
      3. o Proof of your Canadian citizenship or permanent residency.
      4. o Medical and police checks for the sponsored individuals.

    5. Wait for Processing

    1. o The processing time for a PGP application can be long, usually taking 12 to 24 months or more, depending on the number of applications and the complexity of the case.
    2. o During this time, IRCC may request additional documents or information. It’s important to respond quickly to avoid delays.

    6. Decision

    1. o If the application is approved, your parents or grandparents will be granted permanent resident status in Canada.
    2. o If the application is denied, you will receive the reasons for refusal, and you may have the option to appeal or reapply in the future.

    Minimum Necessary Income (MNI)

The Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) varies depending on the number of people in your family and the location. IRCC uses the Low Income Measure (LIM) to calculate the minimum income threshold.

The MNI is based on the size of your family unit (sponsor, their spouse or common-law partner, dependent children, and the parents or grandparents being sponsored). You must provide proof of income for the last three consecutive years, including tax documents like Notice of Assessment (NOA) from the CRA.

What Happens if You Don’t Meet the Income Requirements?

If you do not meet the required income threshold, you may not be eligible to sponsor your parents or grandparents. However, you can:

    1. 1. Find a Co-Signer: If you do not meet the income requirements, you may be able to find a co-signer (someone else who meets the financial requirements) who can help you sponsor your parents or grandparents.
    2. 2. Wait for the Next Application Period: If you are not selected or do not meet the income requirement, you may have to wait for the next year when the program reopens and submit your application again.

Fees for Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship

    • The fee for sponsoring a parent or grandparent for permanent residence is as follows:
    Fee Description Fee Amount
Sponsorship Fee (for each parent or grandparent)
    $75 CAD
Processing Fee (per person being sponsored)
    $475 CAD
Right of Permanent Residence Fee (per person)
    $500 CAD
    • The total fee for sponsoring two parents or grandparents would be approximately $1,525 CAD.

    Important Considerations

    1. Number of Applications Accepted

    1. o IRCC accepts a limited number of applications for parents and grandparents each year. The number of applications may vary, and the selection is often done through a random lottery.

    2. Processing Times

    1. o Processing times can be long, so it’s important to plan ahead and prepare all necessary documentation in advance.

    3. Appeals and Reapplication

    1. o If your sponsorship application is refused, you may have the option to appeal the decision or reapply during the next intake period.
